A nice turnout on today's field trip with 13 observers at the Oconee River Greenway. This place is a hidden gem in Milledgeville with paved trails that serpentine gently through nature. A link is in the previous sentence.

Even on a beautiful Saturday, these trails never seem to get crowded, unless of course a paddling event is going on. Then the river gets crowded while the trails remain inviting.

Our group seems to be typically nicely mixed. You'll find experience birders, intermediate and beginner birders. That way everyone benefits. When observers call out "movement! I see something! a bird!" then we all get to see more bird species that we would otherwise miss. And birders just love to share, don't they?

Birds migration has started and we spotted many Chesnut-sided Warblers and a Cerulean Warbler. Here is a complete list of our sighting.
These Yellow-billed Cuckoos are beautiful! We saw at least seven different ones. All-together 37 different species not including a few Empidonaxes. Who were these flycatchers? An Acadian, a Least, a Yellow-bellied? It helps to identify them when they vocalize but they were pretty quiet today. Fortunately there were plenty of other singing birds all around competing for attention.
We seem surprised when people sometimes ask us what we are doing. We're birding, right? Not always so obvious when the group gets fascinating by the butterflies, the dragonflies, the wildflowers, the trees,..., nature offers so much to appreciate. And, did I mention earlier we are a mixed group? Many among us know these living wonders in nature, and some are constantly expanding their reservoir of knowledge. I saw Jerry Amerson lying on the ground today to take a picture of a "bug".
eBird is a great tool currently used by more and more birders across the country and the world.
We have some members who need a refresher on this tool so Jerry Amerson gave us a great presentation at our November general meeting.

eBird is available for free. A free app for smartphones can also be downloaded from both Google Play or iTunes. Once you have the app on your phone, you can use eBird in the field while birding.
This amazing tool allows you to keep your records of bird species organized in a permanent place, accessible anywhere. And you shouldn't lose your records again. In addition to that, you can check what is been observed in your area or in an area where you are going to. You can also check birds movements as been reported by other birders.
Can you set up alerts to get emails on reports of bird species you haven't seen yet in your area or any other area? Yes, you can! You can do even more than I'm mentioning here. If you're not enjoying eBird now, you need to click one of the links here and check it out for your own benefit.

Our members asked many questions. Little did we know this was such a valuable topic!
Oh, one more thing. eBird has turned this quiet and laid back hobby into a competitive one. You can now see the top 100 birders in a county, a State, the country, even the world! So, you want to go out and see more and more birds to improve your ranking. Don't get discouraged when you make trips that do not yield the target birds. Welcome to the club! It's simple but not easy. Just keep birding! You'll see that "nemesis" bird soon enough.Andre Coquerelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17657442351117441396noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8469497353087919633.post-45622925247888793462016-03-19T18:12:00.001-04:002016-03-19T18:12:38.104-04:00Field Trip at Central City Park

Our March field trip found us at Central City Park with six birders. It was nice and pleasant the whole time. Springlike weather. Birds have been active in nesting, courtship and matting behavior.
Some of our wintering sparrows have started to leave. Our summer residents typically start coming down at this time. We ended up the outing with 49 species in a relaxed birding trip. It was notable to watch several birds fetching nesting material and singing to declare the limits of their newly established territories.
We met at Wesleyan College this past Saturday for one of our field trips this month. Jim Ferrari led the field trip and we birded the Wesleyan Arboretum, fourteen (14) birders in total.
We've tallied 49 bird species including a handful of migrants such as Blue-winged, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided Warblers, and a Swainson's Thrush.
The group enjoyed the vireos and nuthatches we see more often just as much as the fall migrants. When the Canada Geese came in for a perfect landing, everyone exclaimed in delight.
The Wesleyan Arboretum has gone through some improvements that was nice to appreciate since our last field trip there. The College has also added a beautiful new chapel that served as an attractive architectural backdrop to the pond area.
The Lockerly Arboretum with its Rose Hill and beautiful gardens has served Milledgeville and the Middle Georgia area for over 50 years.

The Arboretum was the site for our field trip this past Saturday with eight birders and nature lovers.

Katherine Cummings, the Executive Director of the facility, welcomed us at the beginning with a couple of her volunteers and off we went.
We took notice of various butterfly species, flowers and plants, and most importantly, bird species.
Some in the group, Joe Mangum and David Evans, knew the grounds well and were helpful in the birding/nature walk.

Jerry and Marie Amerson were the two most experienced birders in the group. As usual, a group will notice more birds on a field trip when you have experienced birders around. Jerry also helped identify the butterflies and some of the wildflowers on the walk.

All together, we have identified 36 different bird species on approximately one mile radius walk in two hours. The highlights were the Black-and-white Warblers, the singing Orchard Oriole that we were able to see, the Yellow-billed Cuckoos, and a few Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.

There were a few nesting and fledgling Eastern Bluebirds that captured everyone's attention. You never get tired of the pretty Bluebirds, right? The little ones begging for food were fun to watch.

We spent a decent amount of time admiring the various plants and wildflowers, trying to identify as many as we could.

These are the butterflies we've observed:

American Painted Lady 1

Carolina Satyr 1

The temperature quickly rose to the high 90s and we had to cut short this otherwise pleasant walk. There was a new water fountain beside the new bathrooms. That was quite convenient.

The Lockerly Arboretum truly offers a beautiful setting for anyone wanting to enjoy a nice birding walk or just stroll in nature with plenty of pleasant colors.

Our first June field trip saw us the Central City Park where six birders from the Ocmulgee Audubon group met.
Paul Johnson observed a Baltimore Oriole before everyone even got there.
We also got three Painted Buntings before the morning was over.
The first part of the field trip went on with lively music as a race was going on in a festive mood.
We enjoyed watching a little bit of the race too. We were in Central City Park after all; where interesting activities happen.

We've observed 52 bird species but it's hard to tell if we stopped more for dragonflies and wildflowers or for birds. Nature was calling everywhere with colors and life. We heard more birds but saw more butterflies and pretty dragonflies.
You never know what you will encounter on a birding field trip.

Our next field trip will be at the Lockerly Arboretum. Beside all the bird species, this field trip promises to yield even more butterflies, wildflowers, and pretty dragonflies. The grounds of this arboretum are also gorgeous. Don't miss it.
You can meet us there at 8:30 a.m. June 20th, (all info in the above link) or leave together in a car pool from Dr. Ty Ivey’s office at 1902

Ten members of our Ocmulgee Audubon chapter went to the Piedmont NR for one of our monthly field trips this past Saturday.

This field was unique in some regards. Instead of our normal birds observation and tally, we spent the time appreciating birds, butterflies, wildflowers, and dragonflies.

The Refuge contains 36,000 acres (according to one of the brochures) and we only checked a small portion of it. It's a usual site for yearly butterfly counts, and many birders spend time there regularly.

We've submitted two checklists from our field trip with an observation of 42 different bird species in one location, Pond 2-A, and 61 species for the other portion of the Piedmont. Some species are on both checklists.
Highlights include Northern Bobwhites calling, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Bachman's Sparrows, Red-spotted Purple (butterfly), various skippers and swallowtails (more butterflies). Noteworthy was also a female Orchard Oriole going back and forth to her nest, feeding her young and removing sacs from the nest. Her trips were quick as the male was in the field giving her food to carry back to the nest.
We were privileged to have some great birders in the group, Paul Johnson, Jerry Amerson, Trey McCuen, and some people familiar with their butterflies and wildflowers, Jim Gilreath, Paul Hoinowski, Jerry again, and Joe and Jane Mangum.
Beside our birding stop at Pond 2A, we made other stops at creeks, fords, a pond formerly known as the "children's pond", Falling Creek with the large rocks, and Lake Allisson where we saw a Broad-winged Hawk carrying a snake. We were rewarded at each stop with the sight of wildflowers, pretty butterflies, Summer Tanagers interacting with their fledglings, pretty birds with yellow as in the Prairie Warblers, American Goldfinches, Yellow-throated Warblers, birds with blue as in the Indigo Buntings and Blue Grosbeaks.
The base features over 2,000 acres of river swamp, creek forest, bay and gum ponds, a small longleaf pine forest, upland hardwood forest, loblolly pine stands, fields, and lakes. We typically count 70-80 species on these tours, including as many as 12-14 warbler species (Swainson's is often the highlight). We'll need to arrive at the base at 7:30 a.m. and will bird until mid-day. If you would like to join us, please bring water, snacks, a photo ID, and shoes appropriate for muddy conditions. You must contact Bob no later than April 17th to arrange access to the base (contact information follows).

Bob Sargent
kywarbler@cox.net
(478) 327-3974Andre Coquerelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17657442351117441396noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8469497353087919633.post-79979806037693826582015-02-11T20:50:00.000-05:002015-02-11T20:50:57.930-05:00Great Backyard Bird Count and field tripThe Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) and the Christmas Bird Count are two big events for Audubon. We've enjoyed the Christmas Bird Count not long ago, now comes the GBBC from the 13th through the 16th of February. That is this week-end.

This is your link for more information on this special event GBBC.

Any person can participate by recording bird sightings in their area for as short a period of time as 15 minutes. Not hard at all. To found out how to register and submit your observation, click the link again to the GBBC. You can submit your observations as many times as you wish throughout the weekend.

By recording your sightings, you will contribute to give a snapshot of the avian population in time and space across the world. Yes, across the world as people in 135 countries or more will be participating, people of all ages.

This is what we have planned at our local level at the Ocmulgee Audubon Society. We will be going on a field trip at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center and we will be helping with bird count at the Lockerly Arboretum.

Both places are beautiful and I have inserted links for you in the previous paragraph for more information. The Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center birding trip coincides with our monthly field trip and you may see more bird specifies there because of the environment. The Lockerly Arboretum trip is more targeted to the Great Backyard Bird Count, giving our local chapter an opportunity to help with bird count and encourage younger birders with the passion of birding.

Both experiences will be rich and rewarding.

We will be meeting on Saturday the 14th at 7:30 a.m. at the Shoppes at River Crossing in the upper parking lot by Dillard at 5080 Riverside Drive.

This is what you need to do. Come meet us this Saturday for a pleasant birding experience. We will head to both directions (you pick where to go!) from the Shoppes of River Crossing.

See you this Saturday!

Hundreds of bird species in the USA (including the Bald Eagle and eight state birds, from Idaho to Maryland) are at "serious risk" due to climate change, says a report from the Audubon Society released late Monday.

Some species are forecast to lose more than 95% of their current ranges. "Wherever people live, there will be birds disrupted by climate change," says report author and Audubon chief scientist Gary Langham.

"This cuts across all species," he added. "It's a punch in the gut. The greatest threat our birds face today is global warming."

The study, which took seven years to complete, is the first detailed analysis of the impacts of climate change on 588 species of birds in the breeding and non-breeding season across the continental U.S. and Canada.

As the world warms, the Baltimore oriole will not be found in Maryland in 2080, the Mississippi kite will move north, east and pretty much out of its namesake state, and the California gull will mostly be a summer stranger to the Golden State.

The bald eagle, the USA's national bird, might have its habitat decreased by 75% by 2080, the Audubon report says.

According to the study, these state birds will all be pushed out of their states completely or will become rare in their states if climate change continues on its current trajectory:

Using computer models of various future climate scenarios as determined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Audubon scientists uncovered the climate sensitivity of 588 species of North American birds, combining four decades of historical bird data and climate date to predict down to a 100-square-kilometer grid how the birds will respond.

There are about 800 species of birds in North America, Langham says, so this study accounts for nearly 75% of North American birds.

Overall, of the 588 species studied, Audubon identified 314 bird species that are either endangered or threatened in some way, as they would lose "more than half of their geographic range through the end of the century," noted the study.

Some would be hit even harder: "For 28 species, projections suggest that their climatically suitable range disappears entirely under climate change."

During breeding season, many species would shift from the U.S. to Canada, while during the non-breeding season, some birds would become less frequent in California, the Gulf region, and southern coastal states.

The report recommends that climate sensitivity be considered as part of current conservation plans and also to develop strategies that take into account the birds' shrinking and shifting geographic ranges.

"The persistence of many North American birds will depend on their ability to colonize climatically suitable areas outside of current ranges and management actions that target climate adaptation," the report notes.

The study was funded in part by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

On Tuesday, several federal agencies, Cornell University and a number of private organizations will release a separate U.S. "state of the birds" report, and the outlook will be bleak.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology director John Fitzpatrick wrote in a preview last month in The New York Times that 230 species "are currently in danger of extinction or at risk of becoming so" and that two dozen common birds, such as nighthawks, are showing "early warning signals of distress."

Why should there be any challenge birding in the summer to start with? Wouldn't you think birding is only about rewards?

There are challenges birding in GA and in the Southeast for that matter. It's hot to start with. People don't like to be out on birding trails in the heat of the summer.

About the heat of the South...let's keep one thing in mind. Some of the prettiest bird species in the world are in the tropics where it's...yes, hot and humid. And birders go out of their way to see them.

Another challenge? The bugs! They come with the heat. In Georgia, we have chiggers and ticks, mosquitoes, yellow flies, and gnats. There are all kinds of bug sprays you can use for protection, right? We have four seasons in the U.S. so we don't have to dose ourselves with chemicals (repellents) all year. We'll only loose a couple of weeks in longevity with the poison on our bodies to see some pretty birds. Wash off quickly after birding. That's what I do.

Last but not least. For many birders, it's about the lists. Year-lists, life-lists, State lists, (County lists too?)... Birders make it challenging for themselves to keep birding in the summer after they feel they've already seen the species in their areas. They want to see something new. The attitude is "got this already this year, no need to keep going back out to see the same birds".

The rewards? Plenty. I'll just share some.
There are more birds to appreciate in the summer than any other time of the year. The few migrant warblers we get excited about in the spring and fall do not compare to the greater number of our residents, and summer breeding species.

This is the difference, the second reward. We are not seeing the same birds in the summer. Wintering ducks come but don't breed in the South. Migrant warblers don't linger for nesting and breeding either. Our summer species allow us to appreciate the courtship rituals, the nesting phase that is always fun to watch, these cute fledglings venturing out and begging for food, juveniles learning to make it on their own. That's great rewarding birding!

The above reward is truly what makes birding enjoyable. That's observing and appreciating birds life. In addition to that, we can see the change in plumage as the chicks go from down to colorful feathers progressively. Summer is a great time to practice juvenile plumage identification.

Have you ever seen a juvenile Northern Cardinal feed his or her younger siblings? Totally beautiful. Big brother taking care of little brother. Or the Eastern Towhees and Brown Thrashers showing their young how to get food on the ground?

Birding in the summer allows us to wonder how some of these little creatures can be so caring, loving, persistent, and good parents. It's greatly rewarding to attract birds in our backyards and enjoy them; longer than in any other season. Backyard birdwatching, great and rewarding in the summer.

Last but not least, we do have plenty of interesting species that pop up in the summer months. We miss them when we slow down. The above picture is of a Limpkin at the Georgia Veterans State Park near Cordele. Jerry Amerson took the picture. Thanks, Jerry!

A Limpkin in Georgia? Certainly. Not very far from there, in Albany, are Monk Parakeets nesting. I already went twice and saw them. Beautiful indeed. I'm waiting for the babies to start playing outside so I can go back again. We have Roseate Spoonbills in Talbot County right now, various Sandpipers in Bartow and Lee Counties, Wilson's Phalarope in Dougherty County, and many more interesting species around in the State.

Sure, there are some challenges that can slow down birders in the summer. The rewards greatly make up for the summer heat Let's go out and enjoy birding!

Our May field trip took us to the Piedmont Wildlife Refuge. A unique place to see the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (on the "Endangered" list) and the Bachman Sparrows.

The above picture shows, among others, Jerry Payne. As a quick disclosure, he was not on the field trip with us but we ran into him in the refuge. He is legend and he just organized a "butterfly count" the day before our field trip. And there he was, already out in the field, birding. We were happy to see him!
We were eleven birders in the group. We spent the first part of the trip at Pond 2A where we picked up the most birds including Tree Swallows nesting in tree cavities, Bachman Sparrows, Prairie Warblers singing their heart out, Northern Bobwhites calling loud and clear, Yellow-throated Warblers, and many more.
The last two pictures, the Red-cockaded and the Bachman, were seen and appreciated toward the end of our field trip in an area marked for "Red-cockaded Colonies". (Also seen earlier at Pond 2A). Matt Esterline recommended that spot and I'm glad we made it our last spot as we enjoyed some of the birds seen at a much closer range...Red-cockaded and Bachman in trees 15 feet from us at almost eye level.
At one point, we enjoyed an Osprey circling over Pond 2A. One of our "birding moments". Anne Armstrong has a recording of this on our Facebook Page. Check it out!
Before we knew it, the time has passed and we had to leave this beautiful place. We drove through creek fords, lingered by a nice pond, walk a path by wooded areas, saw butterflies, ran into nice folks, enjoyed birds you don't see in your backyards. If you missed any of this, just join us on our next outing.
Our newsletters are posted on this site and they have our scheduled field trips.
